This short lesson focuses on novaculite, an unusual and useful stone found in the Ouachita Mountains Natural Division. By learning how Native Americans used novaculite and how it is still being used today, students will be able to connect the past to the present. Using state and world maps, they will locate the places in Arkansas where novaculite is mined and the many countries that buy Arkansas novaculite.
Butler Center lesson plans are made possible with funding from the Charles M. & Joan R. Taylor Foundation and from the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation.
